NHS Doctor Issues Four-Hour Warning as UK Heat Alert Hits

The Met Office has warned temperatures could climb to 39C, with some areas potentially edging even higher as the current heatwave reaches its peak. Red extreme heat warnings are in place for parts of southern England and Wales, while health officials have warned the conditions could pose a risk to everyone, not just vulnerable groups.

Doctor's Urgent Advice on Avoiding Peak Heat

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, NHS doctor Mohit Mandiratta said people should avoid spending time outdoors during the hottest part of the day, between 11am and 3pm. He said: "So, it is about doing all the simple things. Wear loose fitting cotton clothing, wide-brimmed hats, wear sunscreen, make sure it's in date, make sure it's at least factor 30."

The doctor also reminded people to drink plenty of fluids as temperatures continue to soar. He added: "We should be having six to eight cups or mugs of drinks a day. More when it's warmer. So, more when we're sweating."

Hydration and Checking on Vulnerable People

Dr Mandiratta recommended sports drinks as they "mimic what circulates in our system. So, are better for hydrating." He stressed that checking on elderly relatives, neighbours and anyone with existing health conditions could be just as important as looking after yourself.

The warning comes as the UK faces one of its hottest spells of the year. The Met Office has forecast temperatures of at least 39C in some areas, with humid conditions expected to make it feel even more uncomfortable.

Health Risks and Red Alert

Health officials have warned that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and other serious health problems. The UK Health Security Agency's red heat-health alert means there is a potential risk to life, including for otherwise healthy people.

Dr Mandiratta said the key message is simple: stay hydrated, keep cool where possible and avoid going out during the hottest four hours of the day.
