Limescale dissolves from taps in 15 minutes with vinegar

White vinegar can dissolve limescale from taps in just 15 minutes, according to cleaning experts. The simple kitchen ingredient contains acetic acid, which breaks down the calcium carbonate in limescale naturally, allowing it to be wiped clean without harsh chemicals or excessive scrubbing.

Limescale is common in bathrooms, especially in hard water areas where high mineral content leaves behind calcium and magnesium deposits as water evaporates. Taps, being in frequent daily use, are particularly susceptible. If left untreated, limescale can restrict water flow and cause leaks and drips, making early removal worthwhile.

Why vinegar works on limescale

Wendy Graham, cleaning expert at Moral Fibres, explained the benefits of white vinegar: “Vinegar is non-toxic and eco-friendly compared to conventional cleaning products.” She added: “And it’s just so much more effective at tackling soap scum, limescale and all the other yucky things our bathrooms and kitchens can throw at us.”

“The reason vinegar is so effective is its acidity. The pH level of vinegar is strong enough to dissolve soap scum, dirt, and grease. And it is especially good at dissolving limescale – that chalky build-up you find in hard water areas,” Graham said. Vinegar is also non-toxic and biodegradable, making it a safer alternative to conventional cleaners.

How to descale taps in 15 minutes

Cleaning manufacturer Karcher recommends regularly descaling taps to prevent thick limescale coatings from forming. Its advice is to dismantle the nozzle into three parts – a filter, a union nut and a gasket – and place them in white vinegar for approximately 15 minutes until the limescale dissolves.

Karcher advised: “For particularly calciferous water in the home, we recommend regularly descaling the tap. In doing so, you should not only clean the entire fitting, but also carefully remove the deposits from the tap aerator or mixer jet on the tap in particular.”

“For cleaning, unscrew the tap aerator or mixer jet by hand or using a pipe wrench. It is best to wrap a cloth around the tap in order to prevent scratches in the precious metal when unscrewing,” Karcher said. After soaking, rinse all parts in clean water and reassemble.

Citric acid offers the same effect. Karcher suggests dissolving half a tablespoon of citric acid powder in 100 ml warm water and placing the parts in the solution. After descaling, rinse everything in clean water and reassemble.
