A dramatic lightning strike ignited a house fire in Emersons Green, Bristol, on Monday evening, June 22, 2026. The roof and first floor of the property were engulfed in flames after the strike occurred just before 6pm. Residents escaped without injury, but the home suffered significant damage.
Neighbours Describe Explosion and Thick Smoke
Neighbours reported hearing an "explosion" before seeing thick black smoke billowing into the sky. One neighbour, who lives on the next road, said: "We are in the next road and the explosion was quite something. We knew something had been hit as soon as it happened and then saw the smoke. I'm so glad no one was injured." Videos shared on social media showed flames covering much of the roof and plumes of smoke rising above the area.
Fire Service Response
Avon Fire and Rescue Service received reports of the fire at around 5.55pm. A spokesperson said: "Upon arrival, crews found the house well alight." Firefighters from five stations—Kingswood, Temple, Southmead, Patchway, and Portishead—were dispatched to the scene. The roof was completely destroyed, and the first floor was also damaged by the fire.
Part of a Series of Lightning Incidents
This fire was one of five incidents linked to lightning strikes that Avon Fire and Rescue Service attended across Bristol and Somerset during Monday's thunderstorms. Earlier in the day, the service had warned of an "exceptional spell of hot and humid weather" that could "impact everyone." They urged people to stay safe in the heat and cautioned against open water swimming, barbecues, and unnecessary bonfires that could spark fires in dry conditions.
Weather Context
The thunderstorms brought a temporary end to the heatwave that had pushed temperatures high earlier in the week. A yellow weather warning was in place as a band of low pressure moved across the Southwest of England on Monday night. The Met Office forecast had stated: "An area of thunderstorms moving east across the area will bring a spell of frequent lightning, gusty winds, torrential rain, and a few places, hail."
By Tuesday, the rain had cleared, and some meteorologists predicted temperatures could reach 45°C by the end of the week. The current UK record for June is 35.6°C, set in Southampton in 1976, which is expected to be broken.
