Chris Bonnett, founder of GardeningExpress, has shared essential tips for keeping lawns healthy during summer heatwaves. With the UK experiencing more extreme temperatures and drought periods, proper lawn care is crucial to avoid yellow patches and maintain a lush green appearance.
Remove Three Items from the Grass
Bonnett advises moving summer garden equipment such as paddling pools, trampolines, and benches regularly. Leaving them in the same spot for too long blocks sunlight, causing yellow patches and unsightly marks. Trapped moisture under paddling pools combined with warm temperatures creates ideal conditions for fungal diseases. Store items on a patio or hard surface when not in use to protect the lawn.
Water Deeply and Less Often
During summer, frequent light watering may not provide enough moisture for roots due to rapid evaporation. Instead, water deeply and less often so moisture penetrates the soil, encouraging deeper root growth. For best results, water early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler and evaporation is reduced.
Keep Lawnmower Blades High
Cutting grass too short increases the risk of browning and stress in hot weather. Keeping grass slightly longer helps retain moisture, protects soil from drying out, and encourages deeper root growth. Longer blades also provide more surface area for photosynthesis, helping the lawn produce energy to cope with heat and drought.
Remove Weeds and Edge Borders
Weeds compete with grass for nutrients, so remove them as soon as they appear. Pull them out by the roots to prevent return and spread. Edging the lawn creates clean, defined borders, making the garden look tidier and more welcoming for summer gatherings.
