Keep Flies and Maggots Out of Bins With Two Kitchen Spices

Householders can keep flies and maggots away from their wheelie bins using just two common kitchen cupboard spices, according to a DIY expert. The tip, shared on TikTok by Ken Long, involves sprinkling cayenne pepper and cinnamon at the bottom of the bin to deter insects from settling and laying eggs.

How the Spice Trick Works

Wheelie bins attract flies because of the food waste they contain, and once settled, the insects can lay eggs that hatch into maggots in as little as 24 hours. The problem tends to worsen in warmer weather, particularly when bins are not cleaned regularly.

Ken Long explained the reasoning behind the method: “The capsaicin [chili pepper extract] and cayenne pepper irritates the fly's senses and they hate the smell of cinnamon. This will keep flies away from your garbage and keep them from laying eggs, so you don't have to deal with maggots.”

Safety Advice for Using Spices

Care should be taken when handling cayenne pepper, especially indoors, as its potent aroma can trigger sneezing or cause eye irritation. When applying it to a bin, it is important to avoid creating dust clouds that could discomfort refuse collectors.

It may also be sensible to place the spice inside the bin liner and tie it securely on collection days to prevent spillage or mess.

Additional Tips to Deter Flies and Maggots

Beyond the spice method, regular cleaning of bins with hot, soapy water is recommended. A mild bleach solution or vinegar can also be used to destroy potential eggs or larvae.

Using bin liners and knotting bags tightly helps reduce spillages that attract flies. Bins should not be filled beyond capacity so the lid closes firmly, and any damaged lids should be fixed or replaced promptly.

Draining liquids from food before disposal and wrapping wet waste, such as tea bags and fruit peelings, in newspaper or damp towels can also help. Leaving rubbish out for long periods, particularly in warm weather, creates moisture that draws flies, so bins should be removed when they become overly full.
