Freeview has issued a fresh alert warning that the current hot weather could disrupt television reception for some users this weekend. The warning follows three previous alerts over recent months and may result in fuzzy or glitchy pictures.
High Pressure Causes Signal Interference
The disruption is caused by a band of high pressure hovering over the UK, expected to remain until Monday morning. According to Freeview, the high pressure weakens signals from local transmitters by lifting them higher into the atmosphere, while signals from distant transmitters travel further, interfering with local broadcasts.
Freeview stated: "Freeview viewers across parts the UK could see some disruption to their TV reception from Thursday 02nd July to Sunday 5th July 2026. This is due to high pressure weather conditions which could disrupt the TV signals which Freeview uses."
Advice for Viewers
Freeview advises viewers not to retune their TVs during this period. "You are advised not to retune your TV during this time; reception will be restored once the high pressure passes," the company added. The BBC confirmed that the conditions affect homes by weakening signals, leading to fuzzy and glitchy screens.
Alternative: Freely Streaming Service
For those considering a switch, Freely—developed by the same organisation behind Freeview—delivers content via broadband rather than terrestrial broadcasts, making it immune to weather-related interference. Freely offers over 50 live and on-demand channels, pause live TV, personalised recommendations, and an interactive programme guide.
