Warming ocean waters are driving the spread of Vibrio bacteria, a potentially deadly pathogen, along the US east coast. Researchers warn that rising sea temperatures are making beaches and raw shellfish more hazardous as the bacteria expand northwards into previously cooler regions.
Vibrio species thrive in warm, brackish water and can cause severe infections. In worst cases, exposure through open wounds or contaminated shellfish leads to rapid flesh decay, septic shock, and death. Those with liver disease, weakened immune systems, or diabetes face higher risks.
Scientists at the University of Florida are developing an early warning system to predict Vibrio outbreaks a month in advance. By monitoring water quality on beaches like Pensacola, they aim to alert health departments and save lives. The bacteria's northward spread also signals broader shifts in marine ecosystems due to climate change.
Vibriosis infections have risen sharply since 1996, becoming the leading cause of shellfish-related illness in the US. Experts attribute this to a 'perfect storm' of climate change, food handling practices, and improved diagnosis.
