The Wellington Square area in Ayr is hosting the installation of 130 life-size military silhouettes designed by the Oxfordshire-based charity Standing With Giants as part of South Ayrshire's Field of Heroes. The display marks the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, with each silhouette representing a real individual with a connection to Ayrshire who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Interactive Memorial with QR Codes
Visitors can scan individual QR codes beside each figure to access personal stories, photographs, and historical backgrounds of the soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War. This year, for the first time, the installation also includes eight specially crafted silhouettes honouring the horses that served alongside troops on the front lines.
Commemorative Services and Tours
The opening commemorations took place on July 1, with an early morning service at 7.30am and a later one at 2pm, followed by a service of remembrance at 7pm led by Bishop Dougan and Reverend David Gemmell. The event was attended by the Indian High Consul, the Lord-Lieutenant of Ayrshire and Arran, Iona Sara McDonald OBE, and the Provost of South Ayrshire, Iain Campbell, bringing civic, national and international representation to honour the fallen.
Until July 13, daily tours led by experts from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission will take place at 2pm, exploring various aspects of the Somme campaign.
Community Reflection
“We are privileged to bring history vividly to life in the heart of Ayr once again,” said a spokesperson for the South Ayrshire Field of Heroes committee. “This installation bridges the past and the present, transforming Wellington Square into a space of reflection. It allows our community to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the giants who gave their tomorrow for our today.”
