A fire broke out at the former Fiddlers Ferry power station in Cheshire on October 15, sending smoke billowing from the site. The blaze was reported around 1pm, with flames and smoke visible from residents' windows.
Fire contained and site evacuated
The fire was contained around 2pm, and everyone on site has been accounted for. A spokesperson for Peel NRE confirmed there were no casualties and said the company would fully cooperate with investigations into the cause of the fire.
The site, on Widnes Road in Cuerdley between Warrington and Widnes, was cordoned off for most of the afternoon. The A562 Widnes Road was closed eastbound from Dan's Road Roundabout, Widnes, to Warrington.
Emergency response and safety measures
Police and firefighters attended the scene. In a statement, police said they were dealing with an ongoing fire at Fiddlers Ferry power plant, with officers and fire crews in attendance.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue asked nearby residents to keep windows and doors closed as a precaution while the incident continued.
Background on the site
The former coal-fired power station closed in 2020 and is now undergoing demolition and redevelopment. It sits on the north bank of the River Mersey, close to the St Helens Canal and around three miles west of Warrington town centre.
