Sprinkle Cayenne Pepper and Cinnamon in Bins to Banish Flies and Maggots
Cayenne Pepper and Cinnamon Banish Flies and Maggots from Bins

Flies and maggots can be a persistent nuisance during summer, but a simple, natural solution exists that doesn't rely on vinegar or baking soda. According to a life hacks expert on Instagram known as "dad hacks", two common spices from your kitchen cabinet can keep these pests away from your wheelie bins, kitchen bins, and food waste caddies.

The Spice Solution: Cayenne Pepper and Cinnamon

In a recent video, the expert demonstrated how to use cayenne pepper and cinnamon to prevent fly infestations. He explained, "Most people forget about their trash cans until they're infested with bugs, but you can stop this from happening before temperatures get hotter. Grab cayenne pepper and cinnamon from your spice cabinet."

The method is straightforward: dust both spices into the bottom of your bin, then place the bin liner as usual. Refresh the spices each time you change the liner. The expert highlighted two key mechanisms: "The capsaicin in the cayenne pepper irritates the fly's senses and drives them away. The cinnamon stops them from laying eggs altogether."

Why It Works: Science Behind the Spices

Capsaicin, the fiery compound in chili peppers, gives cayenne its pungent odour that overwhelms a fly's sense of smell. Additionally, landing on cayenne can sting a fly's feet, causing them to flee. Cinnamon contains potent natural oils that are toxic to insects and can disrupt their nervous systems, preventing egg-laying.

Flies are drawn to rotting food in bins, and hot, humid summer conditions create ideal breeding grounds. A few flies can quickly lead to a maggot infestation, but this spice barrier can break the cycle.

Additional Natural Fly Repellents

Beyond spices, several natural fragrances can deter flies. Basil and mint plants placed on windowsills repel flies while providing fresh herbs for cooking. Lavender and marigold plants near doors and windows can keep flies out of gardens and homes. Coffee grounds roasted in the oven for 15 minutes release an aroma that repels flies.

Maintaining cleanliness is also crucial: cover food on kitchen surfaces, use tightly sealed food waste bins, and consider biodegradable food waste bags if your council does not provide separate food waste collection.
