Cardiff Gigs Issue Heat Warning for The Cure and McFly

Organisers of two major outdoor concerts in Cardiff have issued a heat warning update as the Met Office declares a rare red weather warning for extreme heat on Wednesday, June 24, and Thursday, June 25. The Cure will headline Blackweir Live on Wednesday, while McFly performs at Cardiff Castle on Thursday, with temperatures forecast to reach up to 35°C in the city and 38°C elsewhere in Wales.

Measures to Ensure Safety

Despite the severe weather alert, both shows are currently planned to go ahead. In an update on June 23, organisers stated they will monitor temperatures closely and have implemented additional safety measures. These include increased free water stations and enhanced welfare facilities to assist concertgoers affected by the heat. A spokesman for Blackweir & Depot Live said: “We are keeping a close eye on the weather forecast and putting measures in place to ensure the wellbeing of all our concertgoers. This includes a marked increase in the number of free water stations across our sites along with increased welfare facilities to help people should they become affected by the hot weather.” He added: “Additionally, we advise people to wear appropriate sunscreen and to keep hydrated at all times.”

Red Weather Warning Details

The Met Office has issued a red warning from 9am on Wednesday until 9pm on Thursday, covering parts of south Wales. Such warnings indicate dangerous weather conditions with a risk to life and widespread property damage, and the public is usually advised to avoid travel. The Met Office cautioned that the hot spell “will likely lead to widespread impacts on people and infrastructure” across most of Wales, with exceptionally high temperatures both day and night.

Transport Advice

Network Rail has also urged passengers to travel only if necessary. Deputy chief executive Jake Kelly said: “Extreme heat can have a significant impact on the railway, so safety must come first. We’re asking passengers to check before travelling on Tuesday, and only travel if absolutely essential on Wednesday and Thursday if they are going to, from or within the red warning zone as temperatures are expected to peak. If you do need to travel … please plan ahead, allow extra time and take necessary precautions, such as carrying water, to stay safe.”

Other Events

Alongside The Cure at Blackweir Live on Wednesday, Lily Allen is scheduled to perform at the Utilita Arena in Cardiff on the same evening. Concertgoers are advised to follow updates from Depot Live for the latest information on safety measures.
