Sefton Council to Close Botanic Gardens Aviary After 87 Years
Botanic Gardens Aviary Closing After 87 Years

The aviary at Botanic Gardens in Churchtown, near Southport, is set to close after 87 years of operation. The attraction, which has been free to visit since 1939, houses exotic birds including Rosellas, Lovebirds, and Amazons.

Reason for Closure

Sefton Council will begin planning the closure after reviewing animal welfare guidance and considering the ageing infrastructure of the aviary. The council stated that it is no longer possible to operate the aviary to the high welfare standards expected of a modern site.

Green Sefton confirmed that euthanasia will not be considered at any stage, and volunteer support will be sought in the interim period if needed.

Rehoming of Animals

The council hopes to rehome the animals with organisations suitably skilled in animal welfare. The aviary team posted on Facebook that they are not currently at the stage of rehoming and will monitor the page for concerns.

Staff and Volunteer Reaction

The aviary team expressed heartbreak over the decision, stating they are not in support of it. The post read: "Our animals mean the absolute world to us, we’re truly heartbroken."

Council Statement

Cllr Joanne Williams, cabinet member for public health and wellbeing, said: "We are proud to have continued running the aviary long after most other councils across the country stopped operating facilities housing animals entirely. It is no longer possible for it to operate to the high welfare standards that are rightly expected of a modern site. For that reason, the decision has been taken to oversee the aviary’s closure."

She added: "While many will be saddened by this decision, I’d like to assure everyone that the animals’ welfare will continue to be our top priority. I’d like to personally thank everyone who has supported the aviary over the years, including the wonderful staff and volunteers who have cared for the animals on a daily basis."
