The UK Health Security Agency has issued an amber heat health alert for multiple regions across England, signalling that the heat is expected to impact the entire health service and pose a potential risk to the whole population. This alert necessitates a coordinated response from various services.
Regions Under Alert
The amber alert covers the East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, London, and the South East. Meanwhile, yellow alerts have been issued for the South West, North West, North East, and Yorkshire and the Humber.
Timing and Duration
The heat health alerts are effective from 2pm on Friday and will remain in place until 5pm next Wednesday. They serve as an early warning to healthcare providers and the social care sector to prepare for increased demand.
Who Is Most at Risk?
Vulnerable groups include older people, particularly women over 75, those with long-term illnesses such as heart or lung conditions, babies and very young children, and individuals dependent on alcohol or drugs. Risks associated with the heat include dehydration, heat exhaustion, and potentially life-threatening heatstroke.
Safety Advice
The NHS advises the public to take the following precautions:
- Avoid direct sun exposure between 11am and 3pm.
- Wear sunscreen and light, loose clothing.
- Stay hydrated with cold drinks.
- Keep homes cool by managing windows and curtains.
- Use electric fans only if temperatures are below 35C.
These measures are crucial to reducing the risk of heat-related illnesses during the alert period.
