Spiders become more noticeable in October as the weather changes, with many homeowners finding them in corners, near windows, and in other undisturbed spots. While most UK spiders are harmless, their sudden appearance can startle people.
Pest control specialists at Rentokil have recommended a simple two-ingredient spray as a short-term way to stop spiders from entering the home. It can be made in minutes and applied to areas where spiders are most likely to get in.
Homemade deterrent
Rentokil suggests mixing eight parts white vinegar with two parts water, then pouring the solution into a spray bottle. They noted that spiders strongly dislike the sharp, acidic smell of vinegar, which helps keep them away.
Once prepared, spray the solution around nooks and crannies, windowsills, and doorways where spiders might enter or settle. White vinegar can be bought for as little as 30p per bottle and has many household uses.
Rentokil experts added: "Trying to get rid of spiders with a DIY vinegar and water solution can be a temporary method to deter spiders from entering your home, or choosing a snug corner to settle in. However, many other precautions have to be taken as these spiders actually crawl in from the outside."
Other methods to deter spiders
For a long-term solution, the experts suggest inspecting your property for possible entry points. Examine window frames, doors, walls, and pipework for gaps or cracks that might offer easy access. Blocking these openings can make it harder for spiders to get inside.
Focus on areas where indoor and outdoor spaces connect, such as around doors and windows. Alternative scents can also repel spiders, with PEST UK recommending fragrances like lemon, lime, and oranges. They said anything with a strong citrus aroma can help keep the eight-legged creatures away.
They also suggested eucalyptus, tea tree, or peppermint oil, applied or sprayed around windowsills and doors.
