Worcestershire sauce is the one ingredient that can transform baked beans from a basic meal into something truly delicious, according to a food writer's experiments.
Why Worcestershire sauce works
The Express's Katherine McPhillips has been testing ways to make beans more appetising and says the sauce is "the absolute winner" for elevating the humble dish.
The sauce's acidic quality cuts through the sweetness of the tomato base, letting the strong tomato flavour shine through. It also adds a clear savoury note without overpowering the beans.
How to prepare the upgraded dish
Simply heat the beans in a saucepan and add Worcestershire sauce with black pepper. Smoked paprika can also be added for extra flavour.
Serve the beans over buttered toast topped with grated cheese, then drizzle more Worcestershire sauce over the top. Place it in the oven at 200°C for two minutes until bubbling.
A quick comfort food fix
The result is a combination of sweetness, spice and saltiness that turns basic beans into proper comfort food in under five minutes.
