Water Plants in Morning to Prevent Drying Out, Expert Advises

With much of the UK experiencing a heatwave, gardens, balconies and outdoor spaces are struggling. Patio pots wilt, flowerbeds dry out, and balcony planters become thirsty. The debate over the best time to water has been settled by an expert.

Morning Watering Recommended

Sue Pomeroy, expert horticulturalist at Brightwater Holidays, advises: “Always water in the cool of the morning. Make sure you water at the roots, rather than just over the foliage, as the roots need water the most.” She warns against watering in full sun, as water droplets on leaves can scorch them. While evening watering is acceptable, it can attract pests.

Common Mistakes by Beginners

Pomeroy notes that beginner gardeners often overwater foliage instead of roots, water at the hottest point of the day, or underestimate how quickly pots and raised beds dry out in extreme heat. Good protection is key during a heatwave, as soil can quickly crack and dry out.

Pea Gravel Protection

One effective method is creating a bed topped with around six inches of pea gravel. Remove soil or compost from the roots, plant carefully into the gravel, and push gravel securely around the plants. The roots grow down through the gravel into the cooler, moist soil underneath, protecting the soil from drying winds and intense sun. The gravel must be at least five to six inches thick.

Pest Control

Heat can encourage pests like greenfly to multiply quickly. If they become a problem, Pomeroy advises spraying affected plants with a few drops of washing-up liquid diluted in water, but only in the evening so foliage dries by morning.
