Move Plants to Shade Now
Gardeners across the UK are being urged to take immediate action to protect their plants as forecasts predict temperatures could reach 41C in early July, potentially smashing the previous record of 40.3C set during the July 2022 heatwave. Jude Allen, Head Grower at Wild Farm in Hertfordshire, advises that anyone with plants on patios should move them to shaded corners to prevent them from dying. Small plants or seedlings in greenhouses or polytunnels should be relocated immediately.
Create Shade and Water Correctly
Allen recommends creating shade using shade cloth or improvised solutions like a bed sheet, ensuring airflow and that the covering does not touch the plants directly. Watering is crucial: the best time is early morning to allow absorption before the heat rises. If morning watering is not possible, evening watering is acceptable, but avoid watering during the hottest part of the day as moisture will evaporate instantly. Using timers can help maintain a consistent watering schedule for busy gardeners.
Mulch to Retain Moisture
Mulching is another key tip to prevent moisture evaporation from the soil. Suitable materials include grass clippings, straw, or homemade compost. Allen advises against using woodchips as they can deplete nitrogen in the soil. By following these steps, gardeners can give their plants the best chance of surviving the extreme heat.
