A single father living with several health conditions has publicly thanked the people and businesses of Prestwick after they rallied round to help transform his son’s room.
Stephen Clark, who lives in the town with his son Cameron, issued a heartfelt social media plea, seeking help to give his son a better night’s sleep. Cameron’s room had become so cluttered that Stephen admitted it had become an ‘issue’ and a “tipping point,” prompting his online appeal for assistance.
And the good people of Prestwick responded in their droves - now Cameron’s got a bedroom with a much-needed makeover. Even better, it's decked out with LED lighting, new lick of paint, flooring, fresh wall features, new bed and wardrobe and boasts a giant gaming monitor and computer.
A Tipping Point for the Family
Stephen said: “I am sharing a story of remarkable local kindness and want to extend my sincere thanks to the people and businesses of Prestwick.
“As a single father managing several severe health conditions— including heart failure, osteoarthritis, severe lymphedema, and chronic mobility issues— caring for my 10 year-old son, who lives with Craniosynostosis and learning difficulties, presents daily challenges.
“Recently, our set-up reached a tipping point. My son had stopped sleeping in his bed following accidents in his cabin frame and the room had become overwhelmed by a massive fitted wardrobe and large bed in a compact 3.5m × 2.5m space.
“Because of my physical limitations, I was unable to alter or move the heavy furniture myself and the strain was taking a real toll on my son’s wellbeing.”
Community Rallies Round
Determined to give Cameron a clean, safe, and comfortable bedroom before the start of the new school term, Stephen posted on social media, asking if anyone could assist with decluttering. The wave of support from the Prestwick community was immediate and overwhelming.
Stephen said: “I would like to publicly recognise and thank the individuals and local business owners who stepped up to make this transformation possible:
- Kash (Manager at Flakes Restaurant): Came directly to our home to help move heavy storage boxes out to the garden shed
- Brandon (Owner of Spud Buds/Tempura): Personally dismantled the bulky fitted wardrobe and cleared it out of the room
- Terry Murphy: Worked tirelessly to build my son’s new bed, wardrobe, and computer workstation, mounted wall lighting, and shifted furniture— refusing to accept any payment for his time and effort
- The Family Fund Charity: Generously provided funding for wall paint and gifted my son a new computer, which will be a huge boost for his education and learning needs
- The buyer from Irvine: Rehomed the old bed frame for her grandchild, ensuring the furniture went to good use.
- Local Volunteers: Everyone who helped remove leftover rubbish, moved boxes, and offered assistance on Facebook. Although I couldn’t accept every single offer, every gesture meant the world to us.”
Room Completed Two Weeks Early
Stephen continued: “Thanks to this group effort, the entire room was stripped, painted, refurnished, and completed two weeks before school started back.
“After spreading the cost of the new flooring, bed, and furniture across monthly payments, seeing the final set-up ready for him is a huge relief.”
Stephen added: “Prestwick has an incredible community spirit, and I want everyone involved to know the life-changing impact their kindness has made for my son and me.”
