Fruit Fly Hack: Rinse Banana Stems Under Water to Banish Pests
Rinse Banana Stems to Banish Fruit Flies

A single female fruit fly can lay up to 500 eggs, which can develop into breeding adults in just one week, causing infestations to spiral out of control. Fruit flies are attracted to the yeast released by fermenting fruit, which is why many traps use apple cider vinegar to replicate that scent. However, a TikTok user has shared a simpler and cheaper method to banish them.

Rinse Banana Stems to Remove Eggs

In a TikTok video, Rose Reisman revealed that rinsing banana stems under cold water dramatically reduces fruit flies. She explained: "Most of the fruit flies gather around the top part of the stem, and when they're in the grocery store, that's where the eggs are being laid. So the minute you get your bananas home, rinse them under some cold water. You don't need to use any soap, but what you want to do is either get a clean sponge or a paper towel and really scrub those stems." After rinsing, she dries them thoroughly with a paper towel, especially the top part, then hangs them to dry. She reported that after three days, her kitchen remained completely free of fruit flies.

Why This Hack Works

Fruit flies are drawn to fermenting fruit, and bananas are a common source. By rinsing the stems, you remove any eggs laid during storage or transport, preventing the cycle from starting. This method eliminates the need for vinegar traps or other chemical solutions.

How to Make a Fruit Fly Trap

If you already have an infestation, you can make a simple trap. You will need a small jar, cup, or glass; cling film; an elastic band; apple cider vinegar (or ripe fruit or wine); and a toothpick or fork. Instructions: Pour about 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar into the jar. Cover the mouth with cling film and secure it with an elastic band. Poke several small holes in the plastic wrap with a toothpick or fork. Place the trap near fruit bowls, trash cans, or sinks where fruit flies are seen.

This trap lures flies in with the scent of vinegar, but they cannot escape through the small holes. It is an effective backup if the rinsing method is not enough.
