Remove Yellow Pillow Stains with Hydrogen Peroxide, Not Baking Soda
Remove Yellow Pillow Stains with Hydrogen Peroxide

Yellow stains on pillows can be removed effectively with hydrogen peroxide, according to cleaning expert Lynsey, known as the Queen of Clean on TikTok. The method does not rely on common household items like baking soda or vinegar.

Why Pillows Turn Yellow

Pillows develop yellow stains due to the gradual accumulation of bodily fluids and oils. Sweat, drool, skincare products, and natural skin oils seep through pillowcases over time. As these substances combine, break down, and oxidise, they leave behind yellow marks. Going to bed with wet hair can also force excess moisture into the pillow's filling, potentially causing musty smells.

Hydrogen Peroxide Method

In a TikTok video, Lynsey demonstrated how to use hydrogen peroxide to remove yellow stains. She wrote: "How to remove yellow stains from your pillow. Hydrogen peroxide. Liberally spray the stains, then leave for 15 minutes. Fill a dish brush with water, scrub the pillow. Pop into the tumble dryer. Stain free and full of bounce."

Hydrogen peroxide is a gentle bleaching agent that breaks down body oils and sweat responsible for the stains. For best results, mix equal parts of 3% hydrogen peroxide and water. Dab or spray the mixture directly onto the affected areas, leave it to sit for 15 minutes, then wash as normal. The solution can also be used on mattress stains.

Where to Buy Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is readily available across the UK for household, first-aid, or cosmetic purposes. It can be purchased at Boots, Superdrug, eBay, or Amazon.

Prevention Tips

To prevent yellow stains, consider using a zip-up pillow protector underneath your standard pillowcase. This catches oils before they penetrate the actual pillow.
