Hay fever season has arrived in full force, with grass pollen typically peaking from mid-May through July. For the one in four Britons affected by hay fever, according to the Mirror, the familiar symptoms of sneezing, coughing, and itchy eyes are already well established. The Met Office has issued a red weather warning for parts of the UK, including London, areas of the Midlands, south-east Wales, and southern England, from 9am on Wednesday until 9pm on Thursday, with pollen levels forecast to remain high over the coming days.
Pollen stains on carpets: a common nuisance
Pollen can easily attach itself to clothing, hair, and footwear, leaving unsightly yellow marks on carpets once you step indoors. These stains can be particularly stubborn and difficult to remove. However, a cleaning expert has shared a simple and affordable solution using a natural item that costs just 37p at Tesco.
James Higgins, eCommerce Manager at Online Carpets, explains: "Pollen can be annoying for many reasons, not just for hay fever. It can also leave yellow stains on our flooring when brought into our homes, which can be quite difficult to remove at times."
The 37p lemon trick for instant stain removal
Higgins recommends using a single lemon and some water to tackle pollen stains effectively. The method is straightforward: simply pour a few drops of lemon juice into a spray bottle and mix with tap water. If you don't have a spray bottle, you can squeeze a few drops of juice directly from the lemon onto the stain.
"Then, simply spray this mixture onto the stain and blot with a clean cloth, starting from the outside and moving inwards to remove it," Higgins advises. It is crucial not to rub the stain, as this can smudge the pollen and make the problem area even larger.
Dealing with persistent stains
If the stain proves especially stubborn, Higgins suggests incorporating some bicarbonate of soda or salt with more water to help remove it afterward. He adds: "You must remember to wait until the pollen is dry for this to work well. If the pollen is still fresh and wet, it can spread further across the carpet leaving a larger stain that can be more difficult and time-consuming to remove."
This natural cleaning hack offers an inexpensive and effective way to keep carpets clean during the hay fever season, without resorting to harsh chemicals.
