Jean and Steve Green, often regarded as Britain's oldest farming couple, have made a heartbreaking admission about their future on the farm. Jean, 73, and Steve, 96, have been farming together for decades, waking at 6am daily to tend to their animals. In a candid confession, Jean said: "Farming is not what it used to be and is becoming increasingly difficult to make ends meet."
Life on the farm
The couple, who first appeared on Channel 5's The Yorkshire Vet in 2015, have become fan favourites. Jean described their daily routine: "We like the simple life, we get up early and have breakfast then go out and feed the baby animals we have. We come in and light the fire with wood to have a bath. We're always busy as we have about 50 mouths to feed including 14 and a half cats."
In 2024, Steve admitted that working on his farm "keeps him young" and that he has no plans to retire.
New series confirmed
The future of their spin-off series, At Home With the Greens, has been confirmed. The show, which also stars Peter Wright, first aired in 2024 and has already seen two series released. A third series is now on its way.
On Instagram, the official Yorkshire Vet account wrote: "To answer a very common question… in our brand new series that starts this Thursday at 8pm on C5, Jean and Steve Green will be appearing! In fact, you’ll see Jean as you’ve never seen her before, when she turns into Mrs McGreen!" The post added: "We’ve also been filming a third series of At Home With the Greens. So fear not, much more Greenery to come…"
Early days without pay
Back in 2019, Jean and Steve revealed that they weren't paid anything for their early appearances on The Yorkshire Vet, which follows Peter and his co-star Julian Norton as they tend to animals in need at their practices in North Yorkshire. Speaking to The Yorkshire Post in 2019, they explained that it was never about the money.
Of their newfound fame later in life, Jean said: "[We get asked for] pictures, autographs. We can’t go anywhere without somebody wanting an autograph, or saying ‘Can we have a photograph?’" Steve agreed: "All the time we do. People take photos on mobile phones."
Admitting they "love" the attention, Jean added: "We don’t mind it. The only snag is we get asked if we get money for it, but we say no – we just put Thirsk on the map."
