Johnstone sports facility redevelopment gets council approval

Planning permission granted for new artificial pitch

Renfrewshire Council has granted planning permission, subject to conditions, for the first phase of a major redevelopment of Thorn Athletic Football Club's sports facility in Greenend Avenue, Johnstone. The approval allows the installation of a new artificial pitch with fencing, a spectator area, floodlights, and a car park.

Growing membership drives redevelopment

A design statement submitted in late 2024 explained that the existing site is used by Thorn Athletic as a training ground and hosts regular matches on a grass pitch. The proposal aims to support the club's growing membership and improve usability for the wider community. The artificial pitch will enable year-round training when weather conditions prevent use of the grass pitch.

Future phases planned

The approved application represents the first stage of a phased redevelopment. Future plans include a pavilion building with toilets, changing facilities, and a medical room; a covered spectator stand; and five-a-side pitches for training.

Community benefits highlighted

An operational management plan prepared by Sports Labs outlines procedures to manage the new pitch. The document states it presents a "unique opportunity to galvanise" the community of Johnstone and Renfrewshire. It adds: "Their vision and aspiration is to use the new 3G pitch to support future involvement with the local community for wider health and wellbeing benefits." The facility will enable increased community engagement and positive play throughout the year.

Council assessment

In its assessment, the council noted: "It is considered that the proposed development would enhance and upgrade the existing sports facilities by providing an all-weather playing surface and adding positively to the existing facilities at the site." The official decision notice confirmed the proposal aligns with the development plan.
