A social media user has shared a method for growing blueberries at home using just a single berry, a shot glass and some water, offering a way to cut supermarket fruit from the shopping list.
Armen, known as Creative Explained on social media, demonstrated the process in a video that has gone viral. He placed one blueberry into a shot glass and crushed it until the seeds spread across the bottom, then added water and stirred it to reveal the tiny seeds.
From kitchen paper to pot
He strained the seeds onto a piece of kitchen paper and placed the paper into a pot filled with soil, covering the seeds with more soil. After watering the plant, he advised putting a bag over the pot and securing it with a rubber band.
The pot should be placed in a sunny spot, and Armen said shoots should appear from the soil within three or four days. He described the emerging plants as “little baby blueberry seedlings”.
Transplanting and patience
Within the next seven days, he said the seedlings should grow to six to eight inches long if they are re-covered and allowed to grow. At that stage, the seedlings should be removed from the pot and transplanted into a larger container to give the blueberries more room.
“Keep taking care of it, make sure you water it, and pretty soon, boom! Your own homegrown blueberries,” he shared, showing the plant on screen. He noted the berries were “not quite ready yet” because they were still green, but said they would be delicious once ripe.
Blueberry plants take two to three years to produce their first meaningful crop and up to eight years to reach peak production, so the year of planting will not yield fruit. One commenter wrote: “Seeds always amaze me. The potential in such a small thing is wild.”
