A man has shared a simple method for growing blueberries at home for just £1.29, using only a shot glass, a single blueberry, and some water. Armen, who posts on social media as Creative Explained, demonstrated the process, which he says is so easy that you could soon stop buying the fruit altogether.
How the method works
Armen placed a blueberry into a shot glass and crushed it until the seeds scattered across the bottom. He then poured in water and stirred thoroughly, encouraging viewers to look for the "tiny specs," which are the seeds.
Next, he strained the seeds onto a sheet of kitchen roll and transferred the seed-covered paper into a "pot with soil," covering the seeds with more soil. The plant then needs watering before you "put a bag over it and secure it with a rubber band."
Growing and transplanting
It is essential to position the potted seeds "somewhere nice and sunny" to give them a good chance of maturing. Armen said that within three or four days, shoots should begin to emerge from the soil.
"Little baby blueberry seedlings are growing," he said. He explained that within the next seven days, if you re-cover them and allow them to develop, you should have seedlings measuring six to eight inches in length. At that point, take the seedlings out of the pot and "transplant this into a bigger pot" so the blueberries have more space.
"Keep taking care of it, make sure you water it, and pretty soon, boom! Your own homegrown blueberries," he shared, showing the plant on screen and noting the berries were "not quite ready yet" because they were green.
What to expect
It is worth noting that blueberry plants require two to three years to yield their first substantial crop, taking up to eight years to achieve maximum production. So the year you plant the seeds won't be the year you harvest the fruit, but if you start now, you'll be enjoying homegrown, organic blueberries before you know it.
