Gardeners urged to fill bare lawn patches for lush green grass

Gardeners are being urged to fill in sparse or bald areas of their lawn now to keep it thick and achieve a lush green finish, according to gardening expert Tom Strowlger.

Writing in an opinion piece, Strowlger explains that his method begins with tidying and raking the bare soil, then watering it well. The ground needs to be damp before spreading grass seed using a small handheld spreader.

Cover seeds after spreading

After spreading the seed, he advises covering it with lawn dressing, multipurpose compost, or topsoil. This approach works for bare patches of any size, with the steps the same each time, resulting in a fresh, healthy stretch of green grass.

Watering and settling

While the ground may be harder in warmer weather, a good watering means seeds will sprout in no time. At this time of year, grass seeds can come to life within days. It is best to let the new grass settle fully before walking on it.

For an overall lawn boost, Strowlger recommends applying granular fertiliser to provide the grass with nutrients it needs throughout spring and summer. This way, gardeners can enjoy a green, healthy lawn all summer and well into autumn.
