The Garden Rescue team faced a poignant challenge when asked to revitalize a neglected garden in Leicester that had fallen into disrepair following the death of the family's grandmother. Presenters Chris Hull and Frances Tophill listened as married couple Pritesh and Mita described their run-down plot, cluttered with discarded furniture, uneven patio areas, and struggling plants.
Mita explained: "This is our garden, no colours at all. It used to be much prettier, it's all green and all weeds everywhere. It wasn't always this way. The garden once meant a lot to the family, especially Pritesh's mum. She took pride in keeping it beautiful, but since she passed away two years ago, it's fallen into disrepair."
Pritesh added: "My mum loved the garden, and she loved to plant things and grow things. She used to put marigolds in, which she loved. She loved to sit in the garden as well, even when she was in a wheelchair. We'd bring her out, and she'd always have a smile on her face. Whenever we see marigolds it brings back the memory of Mum doing the garden."
The couple had a long wish list for their spacious garden, hoping to restore it to a beautiful, vibrant space that honored their grandmother's memory and brought the family together. With a budget of £5,500, they wanted a garden inspired by India, featuring a vegetable patch, seating area, cooking space, and a water feature. They also wanted to incorporate Pritesh's mother's beloved marigolds into the design.
Both Chris and Frances presented their ideas, and the couple chose Chris's plan. He utilized the existing patio and added a new gravel pathway, a deep planting bed with benches, and trees for privacy. He created a cozy nook with a corner bench and a small fountain for the sound of water. Color was added with a mix of grasses and plants, and marigolds featured prominently in the garden and in planters on the wall.
The finished product delighted the couple. Pritesh admitted it "brought back memories" of his beloved mum.
