Callander, a bustling town in Stirlingshire often called the Gateway to the Highlands, offers visitors the chance to feed Highland cows and explore what some describe as Scotland's most beautiful scenery. Surrounded by mountains, lochs, and forests, the town serves as an ideal base for outdoor adventures.
Feed Highland Cows at Kilmahog
According to Scotland Uncovered, a TikTok account run by Greig McBride with 617,000 followers, no trip to Callander is complete without feeding the Highland cows at Kilmahog. McBride said in a post: "A real highlight was dining at the gorgeous on site Strawberry Fields Bistro named after the Beatles who stayed here during their Scottish tours in the 1960s." After dining, visitors can wander through the walled garden and then meet the cows.
Historic Stays and Dining
McBride recommended staying at Thackray House, a historic property built in 1625 as a hunting lodge for the Dukes of Perth. The estate features a private chapel within its grounds. The on-site Strawberry Fields Bistro, where the Beatles dined during their 1960s Scottish tours, offers a unique dining experience.
Explore Doune Castle and Outdoor Activities
Just a short drive away, Doune Castle is one of Scotland's best-preserved castles and has appeared in Outlander (as Castle Leoch), Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Game of Thrones, and Outlaw King. For adventure, Roll Out Doors provides kayaking and paddleboarding on Loch Lubnaig, as well as mountain biking and e-biking on local trails.
Charming Town Center and Antiques
Back in town, visitors can stroll along Callander's main street, which features independent shops, and then head to the Antique Centre in nearby Doune to hunt for treasures. The town sits along the River Teith, just 16 miles from Stirling, offering dramatic Highland scenery and excellent outdoor trails.
