Gardeners struggling with yellowing lawns this summer can turn to a simple bathroom item: Epsom salt. Eleni Veroutsos from Backyard Boss explains that Epsom salt, a natural mineral rich in magnesium, helps grass produce more chlorophyll, leading to a richer green color and improved photosynthesis.
Why Epsom Salt Works on Lawns
Epsom salt is not table salt but a mineral compound containing magnesium and sulfate. Magnesium aids chlorophyll production, which gives grass its green hue and enables photosynthesis. This process allows lawns to absorb more sunlight, strengthening roots and increasing drought tolerance. Veroutsos says, "If you're looking for a way to spruce up your lawn this summer and keep it green and healthy, look no further than using Epsom salt."
Application Tips for Best Results
To apply, mix one tablespoon of Epsom salt per litre of water until fully dissolved. Use a sprayer, spreader, or watering can. The best time to water is morning or early evening; afternoon sun can cause water droplets to heat up and scorch the grass. Epsom salt should be used as a supplement, not a fertilizer replacement, and applied no more than once every six weeks—typically once per season suffices.
Benefits Beyond Greening
Increased chlorophyll activity helps lawns retain moisture on hot days, keeping grass dense and preventing brown patches. The additional energy from photosynthesis allows grass to recover quickly from heat stress, producing more blades and a robust root system. This natural method avoids harsh synthetic chemicals, making it an eco-friendly lawn care option.
