Dirty Indian takeaway with electrocution risk gets 1/5 score

Seaside Tandoori, an Indian takeaway on Lord Street in Redcar, North Yorkshire, has been handed a food hygiene rating of 1 out of 5 following an inspection that uncovered severe dirt, structural disrepair, and a high electrocution risk.

Electrocution hazard from microwave placement

Inspectors discovered a microwave placed on a piece of wood atop a draining board, creating a significant electrocution risk. The report noted that the appliance was 'moved immediately' to eliminate the danger.

Widespread dirt and contamination risks

A council inspector's letter, seen by the Local Democracy Reporting Service, described the floor throughout the premises as dirty and the overall cleaning standard as insufficient. Dirty areas included sinks, basins, fridge and freezer door seals and handles, light switches, oven range controls, and the walls, floors, and ceiling of the staff toilet. A sink designated for handwashing was blocked by equipment.

The inspector wrote: 'Staff indicated that the same cloths were being used for the cleaning of raw and ready to eat contact surfaces, presenting the risk of contamination. Cloths must be kept clean, disinfected and replaced regularly (although it is more hygienic to use disposable cloths). It is important that separate cloths are used for the cleaning of raw and ready to eat food equipment to prevent contamination.'

Structural disrepair and lack of food safety management

The premises were found to be in structural disrepair, with holes in the ceiling and damaged walls exposing bare plaster. Additionally, there was a lack of documented food safety management procedures and current monitoring records. However, no contraventions were identified regarding allergen information provision or food descriptions.

Takeaway's response and future plans

A representative for Seaside Tandoori stated that improvements had been made with a view to obtaining a re-rating. The takeaway is expected to undergo a follow-up inspection to reassess its hygiene standards.
