Tragic Accident Claims Lives of California Coffee-Growing Couple
A married couple, renowned for their pioneering work in California's coffee industry, have died in what authorities describe as a 'tragic accident' in Cambria, California. John and Kristen Ruskey, the owners of Good Land Organics and Frinj Coffee, passed away on February 8, leaving their three children orphaned and a community in mourning.
Details of the Incident and Official Statements
According to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department, as reported by the Santa Barbara Independent, the deaths occurred at a residence in Cambria. Officials have stated that the incident does not appear suspicious, and foul play is likely not involved. An autopsy and toxicology report are currently pending to determine the exact cause of death, which has been preliminarily labeled a 'tragic accident' by the outlet.
The Family Left Behind and Community Response
The Ruskeys leave behind their three children: Kasurina, aged 19, and 16-year-old twins Sean and Aiden. In the wake of this devastating loss, the family has turned to the community for support through a GoFundMe fundraiser. The campaign aims to assist with funeral costs, memorial arrangements, and immediate financial pressures. At the time of reporting, the fundraiser had raised over $125,000, nearing its $140,000 goal.
John and Kristen were widely described as generous and engaged members of their community, actively supporting local schools, causes, and friends. They were also known as fiercely dedicated parents, making their sudden passing all the more heartbreaking for those who knew them.
Legacy in Agriculture and Coffee Innovation
John Ruskey, who often went by Jay, founded Good Land Organics in 1992, establishing himself as a pioneer grower of rare fruits in California. The company's website highlights its role as a leader in evolving California into a coffee-growing region. In 2018, a branch of Good Land Organics was rebranded as Frinj Coffee, a name that reflects their ability to cultivate coffee on the fringe of traditional producing areas.
Despite facing challenges, including filing for bankruptcy in January 2024, Frinj Coffee made a remarkable comeback. In 2026, it became the first Californian coffee grower to compete in the prestigious Dubai Coffee Auction. John Ruskey expressed pride in this achievement, noting that their washed Geisha coffee stood out for its flavor and cleanliness, earning recognition as potentially the best at the expo and attracting international buyers.
Outpouring of Grief and Tributes
The news of the couple's death has prompted an outpouring of sympathy online. One tribute read, 'Ash and I are shocked and profoundly saddened by the loss of Jay and Kristen Ruskey. They were very special people and have left a giant hole in us and in this community. Jay was my boss at Frinj Coffee, but before that, he was a mentor, a collaborator, and a friend.'
Another community member added, 'We love the Ruskeys. Jay and Kristen were our friends, neighbors, and partners. We miss them with a crushing ache. They touched so many lives in this community - we know we’re not alone.' A third shared, 'My friend Jay and his wife tragically passed away just a few days ago. They had three children. A great guy, a great dad, I've known him for 15 years- we met playing basketball, had many battles on the court, and great talks off it. I will miss him. If you can help, please do.'
The tragic loss of John and Kristen Ruskey has left a void in both their family and the wider community, with efforts now focused on supporting their children during this difficult time.
