Budapest, Hungary, has been named Europe's most authentic food destination for 2026, scoring an impressive 98 out of 100 in a study by Saga Holidays. The Hungarian capital beat culinary hotspots such as Athens, Greece, and Milan, Italy, to claim the top spot.
Study Methodology
Saga Holidays analysed 5,000 restaurants across 125 European cities, using Google review data to track how often diners praised restaurants and dishes as "authentic." The research was prompted by a WeRoad survey showing that nearly eight in 10 Brits (79%) consider finding authentic food important when abroad, while three-quarters (75%) struggle to find places beyond tourist hotspots.
Budapest's Authentic Offerings
Budapest is home to iconic dishes such as goulash, a hearty meat stew flavoured with paprika, and traditional street food like lángos, a deep-fried flatbread topped with sour cream and cheese. Visitors can also sample Kolbász, Hungarian sausages available smoked, cured, or fried at local markets, and Halászlé, a fiery, paprika-heavy river fish soup traditionally cooked in a cauldron over an open fire.

Alison Porter, Product Manager at Saga Holidays, offered advice for travellers seeking genuine local food. "Authentic restaurants often have menus only in the local language with minimal English; you'll see plenty of locals dining there, and they'll also have seasonal specials that change regularly," she said. "These spots are usually tucked away on side streets away from the main tourist areas, and the staff may seem genuinely surprised but pleased to see tourists."
Runner-Up Destinations
Piraeus, Greece's largest harbour, came second with a score of 97, celebrated for its fresh seafood. Athens rounded out the top three with a score of 96, known for classic Greek fare like gyros and souvlaki.
