Renowned horticulturist and television presenter Alan Titchmarsh has issued an urgent call to gardeners across the nation, urging them to complete a vital task "right now" to ensure their plants thrive during the upcoming spring season. In a detailed video for BBC Gardeners' World Magazine's YouTube channel, Titchmarsh emphasised that winter represents a unique opportunity to outpace nature, describing it as a season to "catch up" and even attempt to "beat her at her own game."
The Crucial Winter Task for Gardeners
Despite the lingering cold, with spring officially beginning on March 20, Titchmarsh insists that proactive preparation is key. He recommends that gardeners focus intently on their soil during this period. Beyond the essential chore of cleaning plant pots to eliminate pests and diseases, he highlights another critical action: covering the soil with thick black polythene immediately.
How Soil Covering Accelerates Spring Growth
"If you want to make sure you can get on the soil as early as possible with sowings come spring, then the way to do it is to cover it right now with thick black polythene like this," Titchmarsh explained. This method serves a dual purpose: it warms the soil slightly and protects it from excessive rainfall.
He elaborated, "What this does is to warm the soil up, not a tremendous amount of degrees, but enough to enable you to get on there rather earlier because you're keeping a lot of the rain off. So it's not quite so wet, which means it's not quite so cold. And the blackness of this absorbs heat and so prepares that soil just that little bit earlier. It means you can get out there and get sowing quicker than you could on bare soil."
Preparing Garden Tools for the Season Ahead
In addition to soil preparation, Titchmarsh advises gardeners to ensure all their implements are in optimal condition. He recommends:
- Sharpening tools like hoes to maintain efficiency.
- Thoroughly cleaning all equipment of mud and debris.
- Oiling tools and storing them properly, ready for immediate use when needed.
"Make sure they're all in fine fettle," he said, adding that well-maintained tools should be "oiled and ready and hanging on the wall" for when the gardening season fully commences.
Alan Titchmarsh on Future Plans and Moving House
In related news, Titchmarsh recently addressed questions about his future, particularly regarding retirement. At the end of last year, he and his wife Alison put their four-acre home, a Grade-II listed property, on the market for £3.95 million. Speaking to Gardeners' World, he clarified that this move is about embracing a "new challenge" rather than stepping back.
"'Are you retiring?' I am asked. 'Er, no!' Consolidating more like," Titchmarsh stated. He acknowledged the emotional difficulty of leaving a home where they have poured their "heart and soul," describing it as a "wrench." However, he emphasised a forward-looking perspective: "But when you are knocking on a bit (which I refuse to believe, despite what the numbers tell me) you do muse on the future - a future which I hope will be long and fulfilling."
He further explained, "Looking after four acres and a Grade-II listed house has been - and still is - a treat beyond measure, but the day will come when it starts to be overwhelming, and I'd rather move on to fresh pastures before that becomes the case."
