30-second trick keeps shower screens limescale-free for longer
30-second trick keeps shower screens limescale-free

Shower screens can look grubby almost immediately after cleaning, but a simple 30-second task after each shower can keep the glass spotless without constant wiping. Every shower leaves fresh droplet marks and soapy residue on the screen, and over time water staining and grease build into a sticky film that attracts limescale—the stubborn deposit left when hard water evaporates. Left unchecked, this build-up can become etched into the glass, causing a permanent cloudy haze and lasting damage.

The 30-second ventilation habit

Jennifer Cartwright from Royal Bathrooms has revealed an “effortless” method to prevent shower door staining that takes just 30 seconds—clearing away hot steam once showering is finished. “Well-ventilated space helps water evaporate quickly from the shower screen, reducing the likelihood of watermarks and soap scum buildup,” she said. “I suggest using an extractor fan to reduce humidity in the bathroom. Keeping the window (if you have one) after each shower can also allow moisture to escape.”

A hot shower generates considerable moist air, which clings to cooler surfaces and leaves spotty droplet marks or greasy smears on the glass. Ventilating the bathroom after showering helps the glass dry more quickly and stops moisture from settling on the screen, preventing the worst stains from taking hold.

Squeegee and natural cleaners

Investing in a squeegee and keeping it in the bathroom is also beneficial—a quick wipe after each shower removes water and soapy residue, drying the glass even faster to ward off staining. Opening a window and wiping the screen takes only seconds but helps keep limescale, grease and watermarks at bay.

Most standard glass cleaner products are not powerful enough for shower screens, as they are typically designed for light stains like fingerprints. Natural products are often more effective: white vinegar or lemon juice, both naturally acidic, break down the minerals in limescale and dissolve dried water marks, making them simpler to wipe away.

Removing greasy smudges

Dull, cloudy smudges on shower doors are most likely caused by hair products or body wash splashing onto the glass. A mixture of equal parts warm water and washing-up liquid is ideal for shifting these greasy marks, as it cuts through residue without heavy scrubbing.

Keeping a shower screen spotless requires only a few seconds of attention after each shower, and with the right cleaning products to hand, the glass can stay gleaming day in, day out.
