A gardening expert has shared three drought-tolerant, low-maintenance plants that require minimal watering in hot weather, ideal for keeping gardens lush during the UK's sweltering summer.
Lavender: A Classic Drought-Resistant Shrub
Lavender is robust, long-flowering, fragrant, and beloved by bees and pollinating insects. According to gardening specialist @viewfromthepottingbench on TikTok, "This one is an absolute classic and is a must-have in every garden. We all know about lavender, but this really is one plant that we all need." This Mediterranean shrub copes well with heat and dry soil, making it exceptionally drought-resistant.
Echinacea: Colorful and Self-Seeding
Better known as coneflower, echinacea is a drought-resistant plant available in a vast array of colors. The expert enthused, "The next one is one of my absolute favourite plants." Its large, open blooms on tall stems attract butterflies and pollinators. Echinacea flourishes in most soil types, thrives in full sunlight, and self-seeds, providing new plants without effort or cost.
Agapanthus: Ideal for Any Garden Size
The expert noted he'd "saved the best until last," referring to agapanthus. Originating from South Africa, these plants come in white, purple, or blue and produce generous flower heads on tall stems. He added, "Whether you've got a small garden or a sprawling estate, this is a plant for you. The trick with this one is to plant a few, not just one, and repeat it throughout your garden. It has amazing root systems, which means it's perfect for dividing and splitting."
