Belgium stars Leandro Trossard and Youri Tielemans engaged in a heated exchange during their World Cup match against Senegal, requiring intervention from Romelu Lukaku and other teammates. The incident occurred midway through the second half with Belgium trailing 2-0, after goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr put Senegal firmly in control.
Frustration Boils Over
With Belgium struggling to replicate their 2018 third-place form, tensions rose before the second hydration break in Seattle. Tielemans sent a cross towards the back post that no Belgian player attempted to meet, with Lukaku stationary in the penalty area. Trossard and Tielemans then exchanged heated words as the ball sailed out of play.
Nicolas Raskin, a substitute for Kevin De Bruyne, intervened to separate the duo as they headed toward the touchline, followed by Lukaku stepping in to calm the situation.
Turning Point
The confrontation seemed to galvanize Belgium. In the 86th minute, substitute Thomas Meunier played a loose ball to Lukaku at the front post, and the Napoli striker scored with a first-time finish to make it 2-1.
With four minutes remaining, the feuding Premier League stars combined for the equalizer. Trossard delivered a cross to the far post, and Tielemans headed past Senegal goalkeeper Diaw to level the score. They embraced after the goal, grinning as they returned to the halfway line, sending the match into extra time.
VAR Drama Secures Win
Belgium completed the comeback 3-2 when Tielemans scored from the penalty spot in extra time. The penalty was not initially awarded, but the referee reviewed VAR footage and pointed to the spot after a foul by Lamine Camara on Tielemans. The win set up a last-16 tie against the United States.
