Slugs are a common nuisance in summer gardens, attracted to crops like tomatoes and strawberries. Beyond damaging plants, they can also spread fungal infections. However, a gardening expert has shared an eco-friendly method to deter them without resorting to toxic chemicals.
Nuria Corbi, the creator of Sweet Life and Lemons, advises against chemical pesticides, which can harm beneficial insects like bees and ladybirds. Instead, she recommends a beer trap: fill small containers with beer and sink them into the soil so the edges are flush with the ground. Slugs are attracted to the yeast and drown in the trap.
Another effective method is using nematodes, microscopic organisms that kill slugs through bacterial poisoning. They are safe for pets and children but can be costly for large gardens. Corbi also suggests crushed eggshells, which create a prickly barrier that slugs avoid while adding calcium to the soil.
To use eggshells, rinse them, let them dry, then crush them into small pieces. Scatter the fragments around plants to deter slugs and boost soil health. These natural remedies offer a safe and sustainable way to protect your garden.
