Welsh independence campaigners have taken down England and Union flags from lampposts in the vicinity of the Cae Ras stadium, Wrexham AFC's home ground. Mudiad Eryr Wen (MEW), which identifies itself as a "grassroots youth movement for an independent Cymru", states the flags removed included the Union flag, the Cross of St George and an Ulster loyalist flag, which they say "have absolutely nothing to do with Wales".
Footage Shows Flag Removal
Footage shared by Mudiad Eryr Wen shows them taking down what appears to be an England flag from a lamppost. One member climbs a ladder while another remains at ground level steadying it.
Statement from Mudiad Eryr Wen
In a statement, Mudiad Eryr Wen said: "Last weekend, Mudiad Eryr Wen activists in Wrecsam removed a number of flags that had been raised on lampposts along the Mld Road." The statement continued: "The flags included Union Jacks, the Cross of St. George and an Ulster loyalist flag. These flags have absolutely nothing to do with Wales, and in actuality symbolise English supremacy in this country and elsewhere. It is an absolute embarrassment and a stain on the town to have them on display, especially just up the road from the Cae Ras."
Local Reaction and Previous Actions
The group added: "Many locals have been infuriated and have called for their removal; this isn't the Shankill and it isn't welcome here. Union Jacks have never been tolerated in the stands at Wrecsam, which speaks volumes about the sort of people putting them up. When this English nationalist fad of raising cheap flags first came to the area last year, it was local MEW activists that tore down both the English and 'British' flags from over the A483 near Rhiwabon. If need be, they will do so again."
