Travel expert Simon Calder has issued an urgent warning to rail passengers as the UK braces for record-breaking June temperatures. Speaking remotely to ITV's Good Morning Britain, Calder advised travellers to reconsider their plans amid the Met Office's red extreme heat warnings.
Calder's Advice for Rail Passengers
Calder said: "My advice to anybody booked to travel by rail over the next few days is, please, if you can move your journey to the end of the week, then do so. It will be much more comfortable and have a higher degree of actually working as it is supposed to. Otherwise, I'm afraid, just be prepared for delays and disruption."
Rail passengers have already been told to travel only if absolutely essential, with significant delays and disruption expected across the network.
Red Extreme Heat Warning Issued
Presenter Ranvir Singh announced on the programme: "Forecasters have issued what's called a red extreme heat warning for areas including Cardiff, London, and Birmingham from tomorrow morning as Britain braces for the hottest June since 1976."
The Met Office has issued Amber Extreme Heat Warnings covering Monday to Thursday, with temperatures forecast to climb as high as 38C in southern England this week.
Record-Breaking Temperatures Expected
Forecasters have predicted potentially record-breaking June temperatures alongside unusually high humidity levels. Temperatures are expected to climb to 37C on Tuesday June 23. The peak of the heatwave is forecast for Wednesday and Thursday, when some areas could see highs of 38C, potentially breaking the current UK June temperature record of 35.6C.
However, weather maps suggest a major pattern change could arrive shortly afterwards, bringing some relief from the extreme heat.
