A vigilante crime fighter, dubbed 'Mexican Batman,' has been hunting down suspected motorbike thieves in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, Mexico, leaving at least five men duct-taped to lampposts over the past two weeks. The suspected crooks were found with their mouths covered and the word 'ratero' — Spanish for thief — written across their faces in black marker pen.
Vigilante's Methods and Calling Card
The unidentified 'Batman' also drew moustaches and whiskers on the duct-taped men, which authorities believe is his calling card. Pink signs detailing the alleged crimes were placed above their heads, and the stolen motorbikes were left next to them. The first victim was found on June 13, tied to a post with a cardboard sign accusing him of theft.
Police Response and Investigation
Despite the vigilante's actions, police are treating the tied-up men as victims. State Security Secretary Juan Pablo Hernández stated that no arrests have been made, but authorities have identified two vehicles connected to the suspect. 'We are aware of five incidents linked to the vigilante,' Hernández said. The men have been freed and are receiving medical treatment for their injuries.
Context and Community Reaction
The vigilante's drastic measures come amid a surge in violent bike thefts in the region. While some residents may sympathize with the actions, police emphasize that taking the law into one's own hands is illegal. The search for the 'Mexican Batman' continues as authorities urge the public to report any information.
