England's wives and girlfriends (WAGs) have hit back at Roy Keane after the football pundit branded their personalised World Cup outfits 'ridiculous'. The group, who have been supporting the Three Lions in the United States, are refusing to change their plans despite the criticism.
Keane's Comments Spark Backlash
Speaking on The Overlap alongside Gary Neville and Ian Wright, Keane was asked what he would banish to Room 101. Referring to the personalised England shirts worn by players' partners, he said: 'Children is fine, but the wives and partners wearing their jerseys, with their name on the back, wow.'
The former Republic of Ireland midfielder questioned why the trend only emerges at major tournaments. 'They only do it at the World Cup, you don't see it at Old Trafford or Anfield every week,' he said. Keane also joked that many relationships would not last, adding: 'A year later they are separated, most of them.'
WAGs Respond Defiantly
According to a source close to the group, the WAGs have no intention of listening to Keane. Speaking to the Daily Mail, the insider said: 'They are adamant they will wear whatever they want. Why should they let someone like Roy Keane tell them otherwise? He's a miserable old git.'
The source added that the women enjoy showing support for their partners and joked it was a case of: 'Go away, grandad.' Some members of the group reportedly laughed off Keane's remarks, while others were amused by how easily they seemed to wind him up.
Ian Wright Disagrees with Keane
Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright disagreed with his fellow pundit, arguing there was nothing wrong with partners proudly wearing shirts in support of their loved ones. The debate has continued throughout England's World Cup campaign, with several WAGs, including Jude Bellingham's girlfriend Ashlyn Castro, Bukayo Saka's partner Tolami Benson, and Jordan Pickford's wife Megan Davison, spotted cheering from the stands.
Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins' wife Ellie also appeared to poke fun at Keane before England's clash with Ghana, sharing a TikTok video of her match-day outfit alongside the caption: 'Roy Keane do you approve?'
England's World Cup Campaign
England's families have travelled across the United States to support Thomas Tuchel's side during the tournament. The Three Lions finished top of their group after victories over Croatia and Panama, progressing to the knockout stages.
