Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo has been named Ecuador's new captain midway through the 2026 World Cup, replacing Enner Valencia, who has stepped down from the role. Ecuador are preparing to face Mexico in the round of 32 on Tuesday night in Mexico City after finishing third in Group E.
Valencia Steps Down, Caicedo Takes Over
Valencia started all three group games but has yet to score in the tournament. Caicedo, an ever-present starter, wore the captain's armband for the first time in the decisive 2-1 victory over Germany that secured Ecuador's knockout spot. In an emotional ceremony alongside Valencia, Caicedo was confirmed as captain for the remainder of the tournament.
Ecuador's Road to the Knockouts
Ecuador were in danger of elimination after earning just one point from their first two matches—a 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast and a goalless draw with Curacao. However, a 2-1 win over Germany in the final group game secured third place in Group E, enough to advance. Caicedo had previously captained Ecuador in a friendly win over New Zealand in November.
Caicedo's Captaincy Experience
The 25-year-old has captaincy experience at club level, having led Chelsea in two Premier League defeats last season (to Manchester United and Manchester City) and in Carabao Cup and FA Cup victories. Ecuador could face England in the last 16 if they beat Mexico and England defeat DR Congo.
