5.0 Quake Hits Southern Iran, Third Major in 24 Hours

A 5.0 magnitude earthquake has struck southern Iran, marking the third major seismic event in just over 24 hours. The quake occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, June 9, at a depth of 22 kilometres, according to local seismological authorities.

Details of the Quake

The earthquake was centred near Sargaz in Iran's southern Hormozgan province. Local media reported that tremors were also felt in the neighbouring Kerman province. Despite the significant magnitude, there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, as confirmed by Mehr news agency. The province's crisis management chief stated that the earthquake caused no damage.

Two Other Major Quakes

This earthquake follows two other major seismic events recorded just hours earlier. On Monday, June 8, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured a magnitude 6.1 quake at a depth of 26 kilometres off Cuba's northwest coast. The quake shook parts of Cuba, Mexico, and Florida, areas not typically prone to tremors, according to Reuters news agency.

Earlier the same day, a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck approximately 33 kilometres deep off the southern Philippine island of Mindanao. The Philippine quake resulted in at least 32 fatalities and dozens of injuries. It also triggered tsunami warnings across several countries in the region.

Seismologists continue to monitor the affected areas for aftershocks and potential further seismic activity.
