Channel 5 has announced that the second series of its psychological thriller The Game will premiere on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at 9pm on 5. Robson Green, best known for playing Detective Geordie Keating in Grantchester, returns as serial killer Patrick Harbottle, a role starkly different from his beloved ITV character.
Plot and Returning Characters
The new series picks up a year after the first season's dramatic conclusion. Former detective Huw Miller, played by Jason Watkins, attempts to rebuild his life after surviving a savage assault. He and his wife Alice, portrayed by Sunetra Sarker, retreat to a remote seaside property seeking a fresh start, but their efforts quickly become fraught with tension.
While Patrick remains incarcerated, Huw discovers that leaving the past behind proves more challenging than expected. The first series established the dangerous bond between the two men, with Patrick consistently finding ways to infiltrate Huw's psyche, a dynamic that intensifies in the second season.
Cast and Episode Details
Alongside Green and Watkins, returning cast members include Sunetra Sarker as Alice Miller, Indy Lewis as Margot Miller, and Amber James as DS Jenny Atkins. New additions to the ensemble are Sonny Ashbourne Serkis, Tanya Franks, Dominic Rowan, Amanda Bright, Richard Pepple, Carl Rice, and Connor Calland.
The second series comprises four episodes, building upon the dark narrative established in the opening run. Green has previously hinted that Patrick will continue orchestrating events from within prison.
Actor Reflections
Reflecting on his return, Watkins said: "Stepping back into the world of The Game for series two is an exciting challenge. Just when you thought it was over, Patrick is back pulling strings with a vengeance. Audiences are in for another brilliant ride."
Watkins added: "I cannot wait to get started on The Game S2. Huw has been through the mill and there's no let-up this series. I'm excited to get my teeth into what's ahead for him."
With Huw trying to begin afresh and Patrick determined not to let him break free, the second series promises another gripping confrontation between the ex-detective and the murderer who refuses to vanish.
