Charlie Hunnam is bringing back Sons of Anarchy in an unexpected way with a new limited series ordered by FX, currently titled Legends. The show will reunite several castmates from the original series, but they will play fictionalised versions of themselves.
Premise and Comparisons
According to Variety, the premise sees the cast gather at a fan convention, billed as the first of its kind in more than a decade, where the boundary between reality and fiction becomes blurred. They are forced to face a real-world danger more sinister than anything they encountered in the show. The concept has been compared to the film Galaxy Quest, where stars of a sci-fi series receive a call for help from aliens who mistake them for a real crew.
Creative Team and Cast
Hunnam, who starred as Jax Teller in Sons of Anarchy and was recently seen as Ed Gein in Netflix's Monster anthology, is developing the series with writer Jonathan Groff, who previously worked on How I Met Your Mother. Nick Grad, FX Entertainment president, said: "When Charlie brought us this inspired idea, we instantly sparked to his bold and entertaining vision. Charlie’s talents are on full display as a writer, performer and executive producer, leading the real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know."
Confirmed cast members include Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Tommy Flanagan and Kim Coates. Fans have wondered if more could be announced, such as Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, who played Deputy Chief David Hale in the first three seasons, and Ryan Hurst, who played Opie between seasons 1 to 5. Hurst was set to play Kratos in Prime Video's God of War adaptation but production has been forced to recast him due to injury.
Fan Reactions
Fans have shared their confusion about the concept but remain eager to watch. One stated: "No clue what's going on here, but they already have my viewership." Another added: "I'm incredibly confused by the premise but I'll be tuning in!" Someone else confessed: "This is so meta and bizarre, I kind of love it." Sons of Anarchy is streaming on Disney+.
