Nick Knowles has confirmed that DIY SOS will return for a new series, following his decision to step back from television to care for his wife, Katie Dadzie. The 63-year-old presenter, who has fronted the BBC show since 1999, revealed that filming for the next series will begin "fairly soon."
Knowles breaks silence on DIY SOS future
Speaking at the TRIC Awards, Knowles told the Daily Express: "We shot 12 programmes last year, so six went out in the autumn and there's six coming up this autumn. We start again, I presume, fairly soon." The presenter explained that the accelerated production schedule has given him some breathing room. "In the meantime, I've got a bit of space because we did so many in such a short time. I've got space to do other things. It's not a break but a bigger space than I normally get."
Wife's health crisis prompted break
Knowles had previously announced he would be taking time off from TV to care for his wife, Katie Dadzie, 36, who was rushed to hospital in October 2025 with a ruptured cervix. The incident occurred 12 weeks after she underwent a hysterectomy. Knowles has now confirmed that Dadzie has another surgery scheduled, though he did not provide further details. Despite the personal challenges, he remains committed to the show that has defined his career.
Surprising longevity of DIY SOS
Despite the show's enduring success, Knowles admitted he initially doubted it would last. "We got to the end of the first series of six and thought that would be it. How many jokes can you make about building is what we thought. Amazingly it's carrying on." The series, which transforms the homes of families facing major challenges, has become a staple of British television, known for its emotional impact.
Emotional moments that stand out
Knowles reflected on the countless emotional moments from the show, including building a garden on top of Great Ormond Street Hospital for children, constructing a street for homeless veterans, and rebuilding after the Grenfell Tower fire. "How do you pick between them? They're all just incredible," he said. The presenter, who also competed on I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!, emphasised the show's message of community: "When you see everybody come together to do something who couldn't get out of a situation any other way, is a really lovely message to put out there: If we all work together, we can do better stuff."
