Newcastle Couple Sneak Off From Wedding to Eat Greggs
Newcastle Couple Sneak Off From Wedding to Eat Greggs

A 'starving' couple who were too nervous to eat before they tied the knot in Newcastle city centre snuck off halfway through the celebrations to eat at Greggs. Amy and Dan Wilkin were so desperate for a post-reception snack that they discreetly ditched their guests and headed to a nearby Greggs.

Video shows 30-year-old Dan dressed in a black suit and Amy, 29, in her white dress ordering a steak bake and corn beef bake. Barber Dan can be heard telling staff 'you're a legend' after they gave their baked goods to the beaming newlyweds for free.

Couple's Favourite Photos from the Day

Photos show the pair sharing their pasties while linking arms outside the store. Amy says guests were too busy enjoying canapes, drinks and music to notice they'd gone for an hour. When they returned, she says guests were stunned they'd popped to Greggs and loved seeing the snaps.

Amy and Dan say Greggs gave them the meal for free. The dog groomer is now encouraging other couples to switch things up on their wedding day as 'there's no rulebook'.

Why They Chose Greggs

Amy, from Dipton, said: 'The guests were having canapes, drinks and listening to our musician so we snuck off and went off to Greggs. We were absolutely starving at that point. We hadn't had any breakfast because we were so nervous about walking down the aisle so we were absolutely desperate for a Greggs. Our love story happened in Newcastle city centre so we just wanted to do some really Northern and Newcastle-based things.'

'We just so happened to walk past Greggs and we thought it'd be a really great opportunity for some photos. Newcastle is the birthplace of Greggs. We went to go and pay and the staff member said you can have it for free since it's your wedding day. She was really happy and really kind to us.'

Guests and Public Reaction

'There were a couple of customers who saw us go in and out and as we were walking around the city there were people clapping for us as well. The wedding guests were surprised when we told them we went to Greggs and they were impressed with the photos. These are my favourite photos of the day. We've got lots of really good memories but I must admit the Greggs and Metro photos are the ones a lot of our friends and family talk about most.'

Amy says the pair took a short metro to the Grey Street store where passengers emptied a carriage so they could grab some pictures in it. She adds that the pair bought some food from Greggs for the content creators working on their big day too.

Advice for Other Couples

Amy and Dan, who first met using Tinder in 2020, encourage other couples to not be afraid to be untraditional on their wedding day. Amy said: 'We're not a traditional kind of couple and we don't do things by halves. We tend to do things our own way. Our whole wedding was alternative themed and we were listening to rock music. We're not a traditional couple in that sense so it was very us to go out and get some non-traditional photos.'

'I'd recommend other couples doing something similar because there's no rulebook you can do whatever you want when it comes to getting married. It's all about celebrating you and your partner so there's no right or wrong - just do what you feel is good for you really.'
