Netflix's new six-part thriller, Below, is set to premiere on October 8, offering a chilling narrative that has already drawn comparisons to the acclaimed German series Dark. The show follows the residents of a remote Canadian fishing village off the coast of Newfoundland as they face a mysterious creature lurking in the deep.
Star-Studded Cast and Plot
The series stars Hollywood heavyweight Josh Hartnett as Calvin Penney, a warm-hearted yet headstrong fisherman tormented by the unexplained death of his father years earlier. Alongside Hartnett, the cast includes Charlie Heaton (known for Peaky Blinders and Stranger Things) as Calvin's son Wade, and Mackenzie Davis (Station Eleven) as a visiting marine researcher.
When a sinister creature begins terrorising the isolated settlement, Calvin is compelled to protect his loved ones. He joins forces with the marine researcher to race against time to confront the beast and uncover the island's long-buried secrets.
Creative Inspiration
Creator Jesse McKeown explained his inspiration for Below: "I've been coming to Newfoundland for many years, and it's become a part of my life. I just always felt like I wanted to set something here, that this would be a great place for something big and something kind of epic. It's such a unique landscape and such a rugged, dangerous, isolated, scary place in a lot of ways. But then there's also this other side to it, which is that the community is so warm and the people are so funny and unique and there are so many eccentricities about the place."
Netflix's Description
Netflix's Tudum describes the show as: "Blending local myth, thrilling suspense, and heartfelt humor, this twisty six-part limited series dives into themes of family, community, and change - both terrifying and inevitable." First-look images released by Netflix depict visibly shaken individuals aboard a vessel, gazing out across the water.
Additional Cast
Alongside the three lead actors, the series features Willow Kean as Ruth Penney, Ruby Stokes as Mary Penney, Rohan Campbell as Jay Penney, and Kaleb Horn as Noah. Below is set to launch on Netflix on October 8.
