Mini Ferris Wheel Returns to Manchester's Exchange Square for Two Days
Mini Ferris Wheel Returns to Manchester's Exchange Square

A 22-metre Ferris wheel is set to make a brief return to Manchester's Exchange Square next week, part of a two-day pop-up fairground experience hosted by Starbucks. The wheel, measuring roughly one-and-a-half times the height of the Hollywood sign, will be significantly smaller than previous installations that have graced the city over the past two decades.

A Brief History of Manchester's Big Wheels

Manchester's love affair with big wheels began in 2004, when a transportable Ferris wheel was first installed on Exchange Square. It returned in 2006 and became a permanent fixture a year later, at its peak carrying up to 500,000 riders annually. The original 190-foot wheel was dismantled in 2012 to make way for the city's Olympic celebrations and construction of the Metrolink line. A 52.7-metre wheel later operated at Piccadilly Gardens from 2013 to 2015.

Since then, the wheel has made occasional appearances at the Manchester Christmas Markets, with a 50-metre high installation at the newly-reopened Albert Square at the end of last year, which remained open until January due to popular demand.

Starbucks Summer In The Clouds Experience

The new 22-metre wheel will be the centrepiece of the "Summer In The Clouds" experience, a miniature fairground-style event to celebrate the launch of Starbucks' new Cloud Frappuccino blended beverages. The pop-up will run from 10am to 8pm on Friday, July 24, and Saturday, July 25.

Attendees can ride the bespoke Starbucks Ferris wheel for free after purchasing a Grande or Venti iced beverage from participating Starbucks stores: Arndale, City Tower Offices, Market Street, and Fennel Street. Ride tickets will be handed out with qualifying purchases.

Additional Attractions and Entertainment

Beyond the wheel, the event will feature live music from DJ and presenter Ethan Porte, complimentary Cloud Frappuccino-inspired candy floss in Strawberry, Brown Sugar, and Caramel Mocha flavours, and a free photobooth for photos. The experience is free to attend, with no purchase necessary for entry.

According to a Starbucks spokesperson, the event is designed to offer "a unique summer treat for Manchester visitors and locals alike, combining great coffee with a touch of fun."
