Mark Pougatch Accused BBC of Lying Before Switching to Host ITV World Cup Coverage
Mark Pougatch Accused BBC of Lying, Now Hosts ITV World Cup

Mark Pougatch, now 58, accused the BBC of distorting the facts surrounding his departure six years ago, after the broadcaster claimed he had 'decided to move on'. Pougatch, who is currently anchoring ITV's World Cup coverage from a New York studio, insisted he was dismissed by senior figures and expressed astonishment at the BBC's statement.

Pougatch's Departure from the BBC

In 2020, the BBC announced that several reporters and presenters, including Pougatch, were leaving. A BBC statement read: 'Mark is a brilliant broadcaster who has been an integral part of 5 Live Sport for years. Recently he has been presenting fewer programmes because his other commitments have grown and he has now decided to move on. We wish him well.'

However, Pougatch painted a starkly different picture. Speaking to The Times, he said: 'The BBC have decided they want to go in a different direction and that's their prerogative. They decided it, not me. I don't know why they put that statement out saying I have decided to move on. But I am not going to fall out with Radio 5 Live. I have many happy memories and have had a phenomenal time.'

Public Reaction and Support

In response, a BBC spokesman said: 'We have nothing to add.' Pougatch also tweeted: 'Thank you very much for all the kind messages... Just so we're clear this was not my decision but on we go. Lots of love to BBC 5 Live. Now three dogs need a walk, not in loafers.'

Former Sky Sports host Jeff Stelling waded into the debate, writing on X: 'Sad that his total professionalism will be replaced by someone who is considered to be more in touch with the youth of today, even if they know sod all about football or interviewing. He can't say it so I will.'

Pougatch's Current Role at ITV

Pougatch is now spearheading ITV's World Cup coverage from a spectacular New York studio alongside fellow presenter Laura Woods. He will be in North America for the entire tournament, while the BBC broadcasts the bulk of their studio segments from their UK base in Salford.

Speaking to Radio Times ahead of the tournament, Pougatch said: 'Our studio is in Brooklyn with Lower Manhattan over my shoulder. It will look spectacular, and I genuinely believe by being there we can absorb the rhythms of the place, right at the heart of it.'
